Shimba Hills Safaris

1 Day Shimba Hills Excursion from Mombasa

You will be picked from your Mombasa hotel early in the morning and drive to Shimba Hills via the Likoni ferry and through Digo homesteads (local Coastal tribes people) and coconut plantations and arrive at the Shimba Hills National Reserve gate and begin a game drive visiting Sheldrick Waterfalls at 11.00 am escorted by a game ranger.
Shimba Hills National Reserve is the last remnants of tropical rain forest just outside Mombasa and it covers an area of 202 km2. Attractions to see on this 1 day Shimba Hills Safari include casuarinas forests, Marere Dam (a water hole where animals come to drink water), Sheldrick Waterfalls. The landscape is grassland. Animals seen in this area include elephants, buffalos, giraffes, impalas, heartbeats, rare leopards, black and white monkeys, attractive sable antelopes, and roan antelopes and different bird species including tropical guinea fowls, fish eagles, falcons and weaver birds among others.
Drive back to Shimba Lodge for lunch (One of the tree top hotels at the coast region where you have a chance to see animals at the water hole) After lunch head on for another game drive till 3.00 pm where you will check out from Shimba Hills and drive back to your Mombasa hotel arriving in the evening.

The Sable Antelope — Rare Species, unique to Shimba Hills Reserve

For a contrasting excursion from the Coast, Shimba Hills National Reserve is an easy drive and offers beautiful, lush scenery. It has a unique and botanically rich coastal rainforest.

Two of Kenya's most beautiful orchids can be found here. Another rare species, unique to the Reserve, is the Sable Antelope with its handsome near-black coat. Buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards and several primates are found here.
The best places to see wildlife are on the flat grasslands near the spectacular Sheldrick's Falls and on the Lango Plains near Giriama Point with a tremendous view over rolling park land to the escarpment, from where you can look out to the Indian Ocean.

There are number of short walking trails at Elephant Lookout and Pengo Fill and the falls. There is one lodge with 31 rooms, one self-help Banda site with eight beds and two camp sites.
